Couchsurfing, stay with locals and make travel friends

Couchsurfers share their homes and cities making travel anywhere in the world a truly social experience. Stay with locals and make travel friends!

Couchsurfing?

Couchsurfing is a service that connects members to a global community of travelers. The website provides a platform for members to “surf” on couches by staying as a guest at a host’s home. Something like Airbnb but you’ll rent you ‘couch’ instead of your whole apartment.

How it works

  1. Registration is free of charge, although users can become “verified” upon payment of an annual fee.
  2. If you’re ready to embark on an adventure, search for the city you plan to visit and browse for locals with couches available.
  3. Look through profiles and references to find people you might want to stay with. When you find a few interesting potential hosts, carefully review their profile and send “a Couchrequest” for the dates you’ll be there. Couchsurfing recommend sending about five Couchrequests. Make sure to personalize your messages and tell your host why you want to meet.

Is Couchsurfing safe?

“Taking responsibility for your personal safety when traveling is important. And it’s just as important when you’re using Couchsurfing.

Members are asked to fill out a detailed profile page in order to display who they are, how they think and what their life is like. They can also choose to become a verified member, which means their name has been confirmed to help the community see that they’re being honest about who they are.”

So, when you make a decision about who to meet, you are provided with information from a variety of sources. Don’t use it as a service for free housing. Where any listing with positive references is a place worth trying to stay. Use it as a way to meet interesting people.

You have friends all over the world, you just haven’t met them yet 😉

  • Jaa ik vind Couchsurfen zo leuk! Ik heb nu bij 3 verschillende mensen gelogeerd en het was een bijzondere reis, ik vind het nog wat extra’s toevoegen aan je reis! Zo’n mooi concept 🙂
